5 steps to establishing your tone of voice

1

Good copy should act as the voice of your business, but how do you go about deciding what that voice should sound like?
Have a read of our 5 steps to help figure out how to find your particular tone of voice.
Look at your brand values
Your brand values are all about what is most important to your business. Your tone of voice needs to fit in clearly with these.

Look to your audience
Always configure your tone of voice to appeal to your audience. They’re the most important element here! Will they respond well to a friendly tone, or is it better to appear distanced and professional?
Look at your competitors’ copy
Have a look at what other people in your sector are doing with their copy. Perhaps you can differentiate yourself with a unique message and tone.
Think about your company culture
You don’t want to appear bold and brass in writing, but painfully shy in person – it just won’t add up. Have a think about how your colleagues interact in real life, and how this can be reflected as a more authentic written voice.
Get inspired by other sectors
There are some brands out there that create a completely unique way of talking to their audience. These are the types of brands that usually inspire loyalty. Lush, Apple, MailChimp, Innocent Smoothies, Netflix – all of these big brands have a really distinct ‘voice.’

We’re here to help.
